Faulty Perception

August 2019 When I looked at this picture after our Alaska trip I didn’t remember that there was a waterfall or river flowing next to the glacier. On closer inspection I realized it was reflection.  My perception was faulty!  Sometimes our perceptions in relationships are totally off from reality.

At this time I was frustrated by a good friend in my life who had so many ‘unbelievable’ stories, that I was having trouble discerning truth from her.

From the journal.                    June.  2005

. . . I want to guard against ‘skepticism’ but I think *Tanya is warped by insecurities and maybe it causes her to perceive things wrongly.

Lord, I believe you want to help me with this.  You have sent many people to me that have had that ‘characteristic’ or would You call it sin?

And I believe God said:

Faulty perception may cause unintentional sin but can form bad habits that are intentional.  Little lies can quickly develop into big lies.  They start with some truth but deviate with wrong assumptions. These can turn into false assumptions that are convenient.  For example; someone hurts your feelings and you become defensive. Then they may say something that could be taken two or more different ways.  You may know what they really mean, yet you choose to take the wrong meaning intentionally to justify your own hurt or position.   That is a false assumption on your part.  It’s false because you don’t truly assume that.  A wrong assumption is when what you honestly assume isn’t correct.

Thank You Lord.

8/9/19  There is so much in this word.  I can guard against ‘false assumptions’ on my part and I can also be aware that I am susceptible to ‘wrong assumptions’. I’ve heard this called “assumicide”.   Thru the years I’ve learned that I just need to love the Tanyas in my life.  I can respond in love to the person, not necessarily the ‘story’.

  1. When assuming, you have to be careful of assuming too much and even the assumer can get sidetracked till the assumer doesn’t know what they have assumed and what they have not. Don’t even start….
