Fear God and Don’t Be Afraid

October 2020

It’s true that we are to ‘Fear God’.  The Bible has many, many verses that actually say to fear God and many more to give us that impression.   It’s also true that God Himself tells us ‘Do not be afraid’.  He also speaks through His priests, prophets, apostles, and teachers on the same theme*.  I believe He repeats both commands because they are necessary for our well-being.   We need to fear Him enough to obey because His ways are best for us.  We need to believe that we need not live in fear because He is for us!

From the journal . . . . April. 2018

Jesus, You continually forgive me for my selfishness, pride and jealousies.  How good You are, not only to forgive, but to give second, third, fourth, and bajillion chances for our do-overs!  Chances to ‘do it right’!  Lord, I am secure when I think of Your unconditional love.  I know that I don’t have to continually be doing something.  I can just be your devoted fan.  Your child.

And I Believe God Said:

Yes.  Just be.  You love to see the tiger at the zoo.  You love the smooth coat and colors I gave him.  He doesn’t have to do anything for you to be impressed.  You give me the credit for his majesty because I created him.  You have a healthy fear of him because you doubt that he is your friend.  You wouldn’t like him to eat you or your people!  What if he was on your side and your protector?  He would be fierce for you!  You would still have a ‘fear’ but also a confidence and security with him.  Fear the Lord and do not be afraid.*  It makes sense.

Deut. 6:2 Luke 12:5 Daniel 10:17-19 Luke 12:32 Matt. 10:28

Deut. 13:4 Serve only the Lord your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him.

Isaiah 41:10. Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
