Pray For and Against Your Enemies

May 2021

When a driver does something illegal or dangerous, I often say, “Lord please bless them with a ticket”. It may seem to be a dichotomy, but a ticket is better than an accident, especially if it involves other people.  On a similar note, years ago I had a friend who prayed each day that her children would get ‘caught’ at school if they disobeyed the rules. She wanted clear consequences for childish sins while they were young, rather than bad habits when they were older because they ‘got away’ with previous offenses.

To pray constantly against the wicked (Psalm 141:5) seems vindictive but there are other passages like this (Job 22:19 Psalm 28:4).  There are also many passages about loving your enemies (Matthew 5:43-48 Luke 6:35)!

The Bible is my standard for living and I take it seriously.  So I often ask for clarity! Sometimes I get it and sometimes not.

From the journal . . . . June 2018

Psalms 141:5Don’t let me refuse direction from the Godly. But I pray constantly against the wicked and their deeds.

God, that’s a dilemma.  Should I pray against the wicked?

And I Believe God Said:

Yes, against their wickedness.  You are to judge wickedness and pray against the fruit and results of wickedness.  Pray for repentance and for what is necessary to bring it about.  Pray that consequences be strong enough to be effective, yet with enough mercy to give hope for forgiveness. You personally don’t want to call anyone wicked and you aren’t called to. But you must acknowledge wicked deeds, thoughts, attitudes, concepts, lifestyles, and mindsets that are godless.  Those things produce unrighteousness.  My Holy Spirit in you, along with My Holy Word, the Bible, will guide and instruct you about righteousness.  About what’s right and what is wrong.*  You can trust that, but be aware of the lies and liars who twist and distort the truth.  Be wary as a serpent but innocent as a dove.*

Thank You Lord.  There is much truth in here and I want to absorb it all.

As I was working on this post, my assistant thought ‘God’s Words to Me’ sounded really familiar, but not the introduction. I looked back and sure enough, I had published this entry before with a different Title and introduction.*

It is a reminder that the Holy Spirit can shift our viewpoint in order to teach different concepts, using the same words and Scripture.
