Ordinary People with Extraordinary Hearts

Since writing this in 1992, I have heard or read many prophetic words within the Christian community. In my experience, many are given with much emotion.   However, that is not to say God hasn’t given that emotion along with the words.  For example, Jeremiah, known as the weeping prophet, displayed much emotion!  In any case, when you hear a word, you must be discerning* about it.  Take care how you listen!

1 Thes. 5:19-2219 Do not quench the Spirit; 20 do not despise prophetic utterances. 21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil.

Luke 8:18 17 For nothing is hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 So take care how you listen; for whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken away from him.”

1 John 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

More scriptures about discerning spirits or prophesy:  Jeremiah 14:14.  Jer  23:16:   Jer 23:9. Matt 7:15-16a.  Acts 2:17 You can also google it to get more verses.

From the journal   June . . . 1992

Lord, Denise Bennett had an angry prophetic word at the service yesterday.  She said, “Hike with God.” But Lord, there was so much anger in her voice.  I couldn’t receive it from You.  She said those who wouldn’t hike would get left behind.  She said more and I’m not sure about all of it.   It’s just that this prophetic message didn’t sound like You to me.  On the other hand, I know you speak sternly at times, and I also know it’s important that we are not casual about you.

Rev 3:15-16  ‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot.  So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.

And I Believe God Said:

It is important to discern My words from words of man.  It is also important to discern tone.  There are times when a prophet speaks only My words, but other times emotions cause interference and static.  You need to be aware of personal motives.  I want the body of Christ encouraged to seek Me wholeheartedly.  Satan wants division.

Prov 16:2 motives. 1 Cor. 16:14 love 1 Thes 5:11 Encouragement

Denise doesn’t need to be rebuked.  She is fallible,  not false, but fallible.  You also are fallible.  I have used your voice, and when it’s urgent, I can override your intellect, emotions, and indecision.  I want to teach you to discern My voice.  If you hear Me and you think I want you to speak, check your motives.  Remember that My burden is light.  If and when I have a heavy or controversial word for you to give, I will make it clear.  Be bold and courageous but not careless.  I am your God.  You know Me, and you can trust Me.  Holy Spirit will bring conviction. Your job is to express My words from your heart.  The knowing will be there when and where it’s necessary, but sometimes I use My people to speak without their knowledge.  Many hearts at your church are Mine, but they all reside in clay pots.  They’re just people, ordinary people with extra-ordinary hearts.

Oh Father God.  My Jesus.  I adore You.  I love Your heart!  Your love is so consuming.

  1. Good word! I appreciate how you explained it!

I shut down when pastors yell or when the worship sounds like yelling. Then, I feel agitated and have to check that satan – or my flesh – doesn’t distract me to division. ?
